At anytime, I would love to receive post at:
Julie Robbins
c/o VSO Rwanda
P.O. Box 4599
Kigali
Rwanda

Or call:
08654777 (ps, not quite sure about all of the in country numbers...00250?)

In-country training has included Kinyarwanda lessons (byiza!), safety, culture, gender equity, child protection...We visited the Jenoside memorial in Kigali. Not suprisingly, I had a similar visceral reaction as I did when touring the Holocaust Museum in DC. I have been delighted by the warm (yet reserved) nature of folks here. People's willingness to let me make mistakes in Kinyarwanda, French, and I must admit, sometimes English. Who can fit so much inside your brain? The food has been equisite; and I have enjoyed the bitter bite of passion fruit seeds.
More soon (Gay for you, I'll pass along my best charcoal stove recipes, in the future).
Thanks to all of your comments: Andy the picture cracked me up! Sorry, I am still unable to add my own! argh. Either way, I love to read all of your updates from home.

Hi Jules,

I'm glad to hear the training is going well. I have been busy all week training my new interns to be therapists-probably a different sort of training than yours, but it makes me feel connected to you as you are so far away. I am getting ready for the holidays this morning as I am hosting my first family Rosh Hashanna dinner, which also made me think of you. Who will atone with me this year? Anyways, great to hear from you again. I miss you! Laurie

Jules,

Great to hear from you. Dad and I had a wonderful trip to Colorado. We couldn't believe that you were able to reach us there via cell phone! (BTW, last time we talked, you didn't know how to call the States. How did you find out? What do you have to do?)

Jennie and Jonathan will be home, ostensibly for Rosh Hashanah, this weekend. We won't see too much of them since, as usual, Jennie has lots of plans for the little time they will be here (seeing Sarah's house, Jayson Brake's birthday party, etc.) We are having the Newmans for dinner Friday night and the Bargers are coming over for dessert after they go to temple. Saturday we will go to shul, then to Aunt Karen's -- although this year her big dinner is going to be in the evening and we will miss it (more about that later). We will miss you! Will you get to acknowledge the holidays and/or do anything for them at all there?

Would you prefer that we put all the specific stuff about what's going on at home in a direct email and/or talk about stuff on the phone or is it OK to post in the comments here?

Love,
Mom

On another note ...

calling you in Rwanda from the States involves the following sequence:

1) Access an overseas line
(ours is through nobelcom.com, which seems to be working very well and is quite reasonable --- 13.5 cents/minute, and usable at comparably good rates elsewhere, including domestically at 4 cents/minute!)
2) Dial
011 (the US international code)
250 (the Rwanda country code)
08 (the Kigali city code, I think)
654777 (the number to your international cell phone.

We've been able to get through quite easily and you sound like you're next door --- which makes it even harder to know you're soooooo far away. We miss you!

Love (again)
Mom

P.S.
The timestamp on my last comment is three hours before the time it is here. That's halfway between time here and time there. Is it US Pacific time? If so, why?

Julie!!!
You sound like you are off to a great start with quite the adventure. Are you really speaking all those languages?? I am thinking of you and can only imagine what it is like there. Happy new year to you and your family! Do you get to celebrate? Ron and I leave after work to go to Milwaukee tomorrow. Dinner at my aunt and uncle's on Saturday night after temple. My friend Tami (who lives in Seattle) will be in town. Did I tell you she is pregnant??! Marisa visited last weekend and we went wedding dress shopping. Did I tell you she's engaged? Work is same old same old. Miss you so much. Love, Rach
